What Is Communion and Why Do We Do It?

What is communion?

In some church services, you’ll find that believers eat a small piece of bread and drink a sip of wine (or grape juice) within the service. Have you ever wondered why?

We call it the Lord’s Supper, or more specifically, communion. For years, the church has continued to practice this tradition by way of remembering Christ’s sacrifice for us. The bread is a symbol of Jesus’ body, and wine/grape juice is a symbol of his blood, freely shed for us. It sounds strange, but Jesus actually set the tone for what this looked like before his death by doing the exact same thing with his 12 disciples.

He told his followers to remember his sacrifice by breaking bread and drinking wine together. Jesus referred to himself as “The Bread of Life” (John 6:35). In him, we find true nourishment and satisfaction, and when we remember him in this way, we’re reminding ourselves that only he can sustain us and make us whole.

Does communion save you?

Taking communion is similar to baptism in that it doesn’t save you, but it’s purely symbolic of the work God has done in our lives. It requires intentionality and should never be taken lightly or for granted. Every time we gather around bread and wine/grape juice, in church or in our homes, we remember Jesus is the one who provides all we need.

Why do we make time on a Sunday for Communion?

Communion isn’t about a ritual but a reminder and an act of obedience to Jesus. It celebrates the story of the Gospel in a very tangible way while reminding us of what was both lost and gained by Jesus dying for us. In him, we have a fresh start, and that is worthy of celebration. In him, we are fully provided for, and setting aside time to be grateful for that allows us to continue to grow in our relationship with him.
